- When did Jester join your family?
I picked up Jester on May 5, 2014 at 3 months of age. He was planned well before that however, as I travelled in the Summer of 2013 to meet the breeder and her potential breeding couple. I also drove back to see him at six weeks. Too cute.
What does your family love most about Jester?
Jester is very smart. He usually learns new commands or tricks with minimal repetition. The bonus is that he loves to cuddle.
What happened to Jester?
He ran by a large bush while retrieving a ball. A dead branch impaled his eye socket and broke off with the stick still in the socket.
How did you decide where to take him?
My Dog Walker saw the impact and called me right away while walking Jester to the car. I told her to go to Beechwood Animal Hospital – I know a vet there. It was the closest animal hospital. I called ahead and they took him to assess the extent of the injury. They felt that an ophthalmologist would have the best chance at saving the eye and called Alta Vista Animal Hospital. Alta Vista said that the ophthalmologist was not in on that particular day but we could wait and see him the next day. Alternately, they suggested that I drive to Montreal – a Vet teaching facility. Beechwood also called Animal Emergency and they said that they had a doctor ready to operate that night – not a specialist – but this was the best option. I had been to the Animal Emergency on Lola Street with Jester for a gastroenteritis and also my previous Beauceron X. We went right away.
How were you feeling on the way to The Animal Emergency Ottawa?
I was very grateful that I did not have to drive to Montreal. It also helped that I had taken my dogs there before. I was familiar with the clinic.
At what point did you know everything was going to be okay?
About 10 days after the surgery was the first time that I knew that he would not loose the eye and that although his cornea was scarred, he would learn to see around the scar. (This was a team effort however, as the Vet Techs at Beechwood helped me get drops in Jester’s eye, three times a day for over a week. They were fabulous!)
Any final thoughts on the Animal Emergency?
We are very lucky to have the Lola St. Animal Emergency Hospital. They came through when the emergency happened not 24 hours later.
